Class 5

Class 5 Teachers

Mrs Curtis is one of two teachers that teach Class 5. She teaches in the class on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Mrs Curtis is also the Maths Leader for the school. She simply loves teaching maths and enjoys finding a variety of different ways to help children make sense of number. 

Mrs Radford is one of two teachers in Class 5. She teaches on a Thursday and Friday. Mrs Radford is also the Geography Leader for the whole school. Mrs Radford really enjoys sharing different types of stories with the children and discussing the characters and settings with them.

Class 5 Support Staff

Miss Steed is the Class 5 Teaching Assistant and works in the class on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. She is also the Out of School (OSC) Leader. Miss Steed has a passion for art and can often be seen leading different creative activities with the children. She is incredibly creative!

Year 5 - Rowan Class

This is an exciting stage in their learning journey, where independence, responsibility and curiosity truly begin to shine. Over the year, children are encouraged to challenge themselves, think critically and develop greater confidence both inside and outside the classroom. We place a strong emphasis on teamwork, respect and kindness, helping children to grow not only academically but also socially and emotionally- all underpinned by our school motto 'Do Everything in Love.'

 Autumn One

This autumn, Year 5 will begin an exciting term filled with adventure, discovery, creativity and practical learning.
In English, our learning will be inspired by a range of engaging texts including The Blizzard Challenge by Bear Grylls and Macbeth. In Mathematics, children will continue to develop their confidence and fluency, alongside reasoning and problem-solving skills. They will be encouraged to explain their mathematical thinking and apply their knowledge to a range of challenges.  Our History topic takes us back over 3,000 years to Ancient China and the Shang Dynasty. Children will become historians by investigating fascinating evidence, including oracle bones and bronze artefacts, to discover what life was like during this ancient civilisation. In Science, Year 5 will build on their previous learning about materials by investigating reversible and irreversible changes. Through practical investigations, children will make predictions, observe carefully, record results and draw conclusions from evidence. In Art and Design, children will explore how artists use space, scale and materials to communicate ideas and create an impact on the viewer. They will experiment with three-dimensional art, develop ideas, solve creative problems — including through outdoor learning — and work towards presenting their own installation concepts.In Computing, pupils will develop their understanding of how search engines work and learn how to search accurately and effectively for information. Our PSHE learning will focus on understanding bullying and relationships, including different forms of bullying, prejudice-based bullying, peer influence and the important role of bystanders. Children will consider how pupils, staff and families can work together to create a safe, positive and inclusive school community. In Spanish, our topic will be weather, building to the point where pupils will apply their learning by preparing and presenting their own weather forecasts in Spanish. In PE, pupils will develop their physical skills through gymnastics and rounders, building coordination, teamwork, control and confidence. In RE, children will explore the Christian understanding of Creation as part of the wider ‘big story’ of the Bible. They will consider different interpretations of Genesis 1 and explore the relationship between Christianity and science, discussing whether these ideas can be seen as conflicting or complementary.


We are looking forward to a fantastic start to Year 5, where children will be encouraged to become curious historians, thoughtful readers, confident writers, creative artists, investigative scientists and resilient learners.

Homework Expectations

Spellings:

Each week, spellings for the following week will be sent on dojo for children to practise in advance of them being taught to help build confidence and understand meaning. Children will need to be able to write each of these words within a sentence to show that they understand the meaning of the word and the context in which it can be used.


Times Tables:

We suggest regular practice of TT rockstars to maintain quick recall. It is suggested 25 minutes each week. 

Reading:

We really encourage regular reading at home to help support imagination, spellings, empathy, sentence structure as well as helping well-being. We ask for a minimum of 4 times a week for around 20 minutes and for parents to sign the reading journal each time a child has read. 


Optional maths homework:

Children have the option to bring home maths sheets from the lesson to practise what we have done in lessons.
