Year 5
This is an exciting stage in their learning journey, where independence, responsibility and curiosity truly begin to shine. Over the year, children are encouraged to challenge themselves, think critically and develop greater confidence both inside and outside the classroom. We place a strong emphasis on teamwork, respect and kindness, helping children to grow not only academically but also socially and emotionally- all underpinned by our school motto 'Do Everything in Love.'
We value the partnership between home and school and believe that by working together we can ensure that every child thrive. Please check our Class Story on Class Dojo regularly and feel free to contact us on Dojo with any questions- Miss Curtis Mon- Wed and Mrs Radford Thur-Fri.
Summer term
This summer term, our learning journey is based around the theme “From Greeks to Growing,” combining history, science, and geography in an exciting and hands-on way. In Science, we explore life cycles and create informative leaflets to showcase the life cycles of different animals. We also investigate plant growth by planting our own potatoes and growing basil from cuttings, helping us to understand asexual reproduction in a practical context. This links closely with our Geography topic, “Sow, Grow and Farm.” We begin with a visit to local allotments, where we learn about land use and what makes a suitable site. Our studies then broaden to a global perspective as we explore potato farming in Jersey, cocoa production and fair trade, and citrus farming in America. We are delighted to welcome a representative from Hotel Chocolat, who will share insights into cocoa production and fair trade. Our exploration of the Ancient Greeks concludes with a trip to the Fitzwilliam Museum. We also visit and the Botanic Gardens, where we study plants from a range of biomes around the world. In English, pupils develop their writing skills by crafting persuasive arguments about the most influential Greek figure, as well as producing non-chronological reports on potato farming alongside other creative writing pieces. In maths, we continue to build on our understanding of shape by exploring angles, before moving on to position and direction using coordinates. We revisit decimals, focusing on addition, subtraction, and multiplying and dividing by multiples of 10. Later in the term, we will learn about negative numbers, convert units of measurement, and explore volume. In Religious Education, we study Buddhism and Humanism, while in PSHCE, we cover relationship and sex education, managing change, and drug education. In Art, pupils will create self-portraits inspired by nature. We are also really looking forward to Forest School again in the first half of the term followed by athletics and dance after half term.

E Safety
We teach E Safety at school. Here are some website links that you could use to talk about E Safety at home. They include games for children to play and information for you to read as a Parent/Carer.

Homework Expectations
Spellings:
Each week, spellings for the following week will be sent on dojo for children to practise in advance of them being taught to help build confidence and understand meaning. Children will need to be able to write each of these words within a sentence to show that they understand the meaning of the word and the context in which it can be used.
Times Tables:
We suggest regular practice of TT rockstars to maintain quick recall. It is suggested 25 minutes each week.
Reading:
We really encourage regular reading at home to help support imagination, spellings, empathy, sentence structure as well as helping well-being. We ask for a minimum of 4 times a week for around 20 minutes and for parents to sign the reading journal each time a child has read.
Optional maths homework:
Children have the option to bring home maths sheets from the lesson to practise what we have done in lessons.
